For DST, the Matchup Is the Strategy

No fantasy position depends on weekly matchups more than defense.

If you waited to draft fantasy defense/special teams, as our Redraft Strategy Playbook recommends, the best move is to stream the position and chase matchups.

Let’s break down how DST scoring works and identify the best Week 1 streaming targets.

Breaking Down the Basics of DST Scoring

Most fantasy football leagues score team defenses on the following categories:

  • Points allowed
  • Sacks
  • Interceptions
  • Fumble recoveries
  • TDs

Because TDs are worth 6 points, including return scores, they create the biggest weekly swings. If your DST finds the end zone, you’ve almost certainly got a top-10 week.

The problem: Those scoring plays aren’t predictable.

Instead, points allowed give us the most predictable signal for DST fantasy scoring. In general, target defenses that are expected to allow the fewest points in a given week over trying to chase less-predictable big plays.

That often means simply targeting defenses facing the worst NFL offenses.

Why Turnovers and Sacks Aren’t Reliable

TDs aren’t the only volatile category. INT leaders rarely repeat from year to year. Fumble recoveries are even less predictable. And even sack totals fluctuate.

We still want defenses with playmakers, especially stud pass rushers and DBs who get their hands on the ball.

But as far as DST scoring categories go, we want to chase points allowed the most.

The Real Edge: Exploiting Matchups

Don’t lock yourself into one defense all season. DST scoring is volatile, and so are weekly opponents.

Some defenses will be better than others at limiting points. But if one of them draws the Eagles or Chiefs, you’ll probably want a different DST that week.

Week 1 Defenses Worth Drafting Right Now

Los Angeles Chargers (vs. Arizona Cardinals) 

The Chargers presented a strong defense last season, ranking 10th in defensive Defense-adjusted Value Over Average (DVOA). They ranked 11th in sacks (45) and tied for third in INTs (19), and then they added first-round pass rusher Akheem Mesidor (considered one of the more NFL ready prospects).

But the best part: the Chargers' opening opponent.

The Cardinals, led by QB Jacoby Brissett, are implied for the second-fewest points per game (18.56) this season. They are tied for the fewest expected TDs as well (33.92).

The Cardinals’ O-line doesn’t look likely to help, sitting 28th in our ranks.

You can also keep the Chargers D around for a Week 2 home date with the Kirk Cousins-led Raiders. You’ll probably want to dump them after that, though, ahead of an unfriendly schedule turn:

  • at Buffalo
  • at Seattle
  • vs. Denver
  • at Kansas City
  • bye

Pittsburgh Steelers (vs. Atlanta Falcons)

The Steelers’ defense has been solid for fantasy, especially with high sack numbers from OLB T.J. Watt. They finished third in fantasy scoring last year and fifth in 2024.

Pittsburgh ranked 11th in defensive DVOA last year, 16th in sacks (40), and fourth in INTs (17). 

New DC Patrick Graham is keeping Pittsburgh’s 3-4 base while mixing in some 2-4-5 looks to maximize pass-rushing LBs Watt, Alex Highsmith, and Nick Herbig. That means the defense should continue prioritizing sacks. 

Like the Chargers, the best part of the Steelers defense for Week 1 is the opponent: a Falcons team that still doesn’t have a viable QB after a disappointing “battle” between Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr.. Penix is coming off a torn ACL, while Tagovailoa simply performed poorly.

The QB matchup alone makes the Steelers an upside start, even against Bijan Robinson. You’ll just have to ditch them ahead of matchups with the Patriots and Bengals the next two weeks.

New York Jets (at Tennessee Titans)

The Jets aren’t the most inspiring option after failing to record a single INT last season, but they can work as a sneaky Week 1 start if you have to dig deep.

They ranked 31st in defensive DVOA last year and dead last in fantasy scoring, but the front office remade the unit for 2026

The Jets drafted Edge David Bailey second overall, and Bailey has looked “special,” according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini. The Jets also replaced five other defensive starters.

An improved pass rush may be enough for the Jets to produce against the Titans and struggling second-year QB Cam Ward.

Ward has struggled this preseason, going 5-of-12 in the team’s second preseason game. The potential for a second-year breakout appears on hold while the offense on whole failed to impress in preseason action. 

We also rank Titans’ O-line just 29th. That doesn’t bode well for Ward or the Tennessee RBs.

Defense to Consider Beyond Week 1 Before Everyone Else Figures It Out

Stash this defense if you are looking ahead to Week 2 and beyond.

San Francisco 49ers

Avoid the 49ers for Week 1 against the Rams, but they look better against the Dolphins and Cardinals the next two weeks.

Injuries dragged the 49ers down to 27th in DVOA last year. A healthier start should help them rebound against weak opponents.
